In his second successive appearance as a Grammy Award nominee, Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy emerged winner in the Best Global Music Album category. The singer, nominated for his album Twice As Tall, fought off stiff competition from four other contestants including Tinariwen, a Malian band.
“[He] continues to torch limitations, seamlessly blending styles and genres and fearlessly fuelling the fire heating the melting pot of pop, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and more,” said Grammy when talking about Burna. It also described the album as, “a masterclass in the vibe and hustle that have made Burna Boy an international musical force”.
During his acceptance speech Burna Boy said, “This is a big win for my generation of Africans all over the world, and this should be a lesson to every African out there: no matter where you are, no matter what you plan to do, you can achieve it, no matter where you are from, because you are a king”.
Another big winner for the night was fellow countryman Wizkid whose video for the song Brown Skin Girl won in the Best Music Video. The video, from Lion King, features Beyonce and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter. His win defeated other international bigwigs like Anderson Park, Drake and Woodkid.
Fellow singer David was quick to congratulate the winners.
