It was a night to forget at Camp Nou for Messi and company after their French visitors ran riot. Led by 22-year old Kylian Mbappe, Paris Saint German were in Catalan for the first leg match of a round of 16 Champions League tie against Barcelona.
There was controversy at the 27th minute after Frenkie de Jong had his heels clipped by PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa. This prompted a penalty kick for the Catalans which talisman Lionel Messi converted. Five minutes later, Mbappe made it 1-1 making the first half end in a draw.
20 minutes into the second half of the game PSG mauled Barcelona as Mbappe scored a second one before Moise Kean, on loan from Everton, scored his own for the night. It was 3-1 for the visitors with Mbappe making it 4-1 only 5 minutes into stoppage time after brilliantly curling his shot at the top corner away from Ter Stegen’s reach. Mbappe became the first player to score a visiting hat-trick at the Camp Nou since Andriy Shevchenko in 1997 and also became the youngest player to score a brace against Barcelona in the knockout stage.
It was really Mbappe’s night, with PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino claiming that he (Mbappe) had foreseen the big win.
“Before the match, he asked me how many times I had won at Camp Nou,” said Pochettino in his post-match interview, “‘Once,’ I told him. He replied to me: ‘Tomorrow, we are going to win a second time.” With star players Neymar and Di Maria out with injuries, nobody would have anticipated such a huge.
